3 Up, 3 Down in the NFC
3 Up
Ahmad Bradshaw – With Brandon Jacobs out, he got the goal
line carries, and he took advantage. 3 scores from the 1 yard line gave him a
30 point fantasy day, and more than likely won your matchup if you started him.
Can you rely on him to do this every week? Probably not, but he has the ability
to be a 15 point scorer every week. Continue to roll him as a solid #2 RB.
Josh Freeman – Finally Freeman gets on track this season.
Over 300 yards and 2 scores with no turnovers makes you a top 10 QB. I doubt,
however, that he keeps this pace for the rest of the season. The Bucs are a run
first team and this game represents the ceiling for Freeman.
Frank Gore – Against a tough Detroit defense, Gore ran
only 15 times, but for over 140 yards and a score. Gore is one of the most
explosive backs in the NFL when he’s healthy, and right now he looks as healthy
as ever. Anyone holding on to Kendall Hunter, unless you own Frank as well –
feel free to drop him.
3 Down
Redskins RB’s Ryan Torian, Tim Hightower, and Roy Helu –
12 carries for 28 yards for the three combined. Yuck. How do you put any of
these guys in your lineup going forward? You won’t know who gets the most
carries, snaps, or looks out of the backfield receiving, so you’re just playing
odds and guessing. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather not just guess for my
fantasy lineup. Extra Redskin – Rex Grossman – 4 picks. Get him out of your
lineup and maybe even off your team.
Desean Jackson – For where you drafted him, this isn’t
even close to good enough. Probably most of you drafted him as your number 1
receiver, and 3 catches, 46 yards later, are wondering why your star receiver
isn’t scoring points. As long as the offensive line in Philly struggles, Vick
won’t have time to find Jackson deep, and will continue to dump it to Maclin on
intermediate routes. You can’t sit him because of his big play ability, but you
sure wish you were getting more out of him right now.
Roddy White – What has happened to Roddy? Another guy you
drafted as the best receiver maybe in the league, Roddy caught 2 balls for 21
yards on only 5 targets! Like Jackson you can’t really sit him, because I doubt
you have anyone better, but what is going on in Atlanta? They’re running the
ball again. Turner had 27 carries, and the Atlanta offense realized they win
more games when the run the ball and control the game. Temper your expectations
for Roddy going forward. Plus side – If the Falcons start to run the ball more
and more, the playaction pass becomes more of a weapon.
3 Up, 3 Down in the AFC
3 Up
Rashard Mendenhall – I guess those of you worried that he might still be hurt going into week 6 had your questions answered. Mendenhall was terrific against the Jaguars, who had been surprisingly good against the run this year so far. Mendenhall saw 23 carries and had 146 yards with a TD. Those of you who have been patient with him this long (like me), were handsomely rewarded this week. Pittsburgh is traveling out to the desert this week to face the Arizona Cardinals. This season, Arizona has been averaging 118.8 yards to opposing running backs, including that gigantic week AD put up against them in week 5. The moral of this story is, Mendenhall is a must start this week.
Fred Jackson – In case you’ve been away from the NFL for 6 weeks, I’ll let you in on a little secret… FRED JACKSON IS REALLY GOOD! 121 yards on the ground with a TD, and 47 yards in the air. Now, I know most of his yards came from his long run in the first half, but he was very limited in the second half, as the Bills were playing catch-up to the giants, and were forced to throw the ball more in the second half. You probably drafted him to be your #2 running back, but are luckily getting first-round value out of him. He’s on a bye this week, but continue running him out there, week in and week out starting in week 8.
Andy Dalton – Big Red, The Red Pistol, The Red Rocket, whatever you want to call him, he’s been doing surprisingly well this season. Week 6 was no exception, as he posted 264 yards with a TD. 16 points from a backup/Bye week replacement QB isn’t terrible! Proceed with caution, as I would advise with any rookie. He is on a bye this week, but if you need a replacement QB in week 8 going forward, you could do a lot worse than Dalton.
3 Down
Matt Schaub – The Houston passing game has taken a big hit since Andre Johnson got injured, and it shows. With only 220 yards, and 1TD in a game they were behind in for most of the second half, that doesn’t translate to well to fantasy owners. Until Andre Johnson comes back healthy, I’m not sure Schaub is an automatic start for you every week.
The Miami Dolphins – As a definite contender for the “Suck for Luck” campaign, the Dolphins are starting at a pretty disappointing 2011/2012 season. It was painful to watch Matt Moore attempt to force feed the ball to Brandon Marshall all night Monday night. After 13 targets, Marshall only ended up with 6 receptions, but did manage to get 109 yards. Only one other Dolphin had more than 3 targets that whole game. When you are behind, your running game has been essentially shut down, and your looking to catch up, you need to be willing to spread that ball around, especially when you have a shutdown player like Revis covering Marshall. Is 1-15 too harsh of a prediction for this season?
Colts Receivers – As much as it pains me to admit this finally, the Colts receivers cannot be trusted to be a reliable fantasy option at this point. I think Curtis Painter has tremendous upside, but until he figures it out, you really cannot rely on any one Indy receiver. It was nice to see Dallas Clark finally have a decent game, but again, there was no stand out performer. Garcon once again got the most targets, but he, Wayne, and Clark all ended up around 55 yards each. At this point, you really have to consider each of them a #3 receiver (#2 TE in Clark’s case), and proceed with caution.
